Scripture Text (NRSV)

Wisdom of Solomon 1:13-15, 2:23-24

1:13 God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living.

1:14 For he created all things so that they might exist; the generative forces of the world are wholesome, and there is no destructive poison in them, and the dominion of Hades is not on earth.

1:15 For righteousness is immortal.

2:23 For God created us for incorruption, and made us in the image of his own eternity,

2:24 but through the devil's envy death entered the world, and those who belong to his company experience it.

Comments:

Wow! For the baptismal theme how about killing death by submersion in the baptismal waters? What is baptism other than reclaiming the image of eternity, that we can show a "family resemblance" to our Father? Yikes! I wish I had a baptism this week.

How does it happen that we were destined for life and yet we experience death? Is it possible to suggest that death is only a subjective experience for those who are righteous; and an objective reality for the unrighteous.

If we were created for incorruption, then how could death enter the world, except through our own loss of self which comes when we no longer recognize in whose image we have been created.
